 터너를 만나기위하여 우리는 철근 구조물들로 육중하게 들어선도시위로 날아 올라야 한다.

일몰의 공기처럼 가볍게 가로수와 지붕들위로 상승하여 아득한 옛날의 카르타고 항구로,

신화의 이탈리아 네미 호숫가로, 그리하여 광활한 바다에서 막 기화하며 춤추는 수증기들과 만나야 한다.

터너의 세계에서는 모든것이 흐르는 액체이며, 춤추는 기체이다.

 이발사의 아들로 런던에서 태어난 터너는 14살때 로열 아카데미에 입학하고,

그림 솜시를 인정받은 27살의 젊은 나이에 일약 로열 아카데미 회원이 된다.

그는 사는 동안 서른번이 넘게 외국여행을 하는데, 여정에서 스친 수천 폭의 풍경들은 

그의 기억속에 대기와 빛과 안개가 되어 흘러나게 된다.

 

그가 남긴 그림속에서 흘러다니고 있는 광활한 빛과 대기는 우리를 황홀하게 한다.

그 속에 서면 우리도 기체가 된다.

참을수 없이 가벼운 색체가 된다.

 . .

빛과 색의 변화와 효과를 섬세하게 포착한 점에서 그가 인상파의 선구로 여겨지는 것은 당연하다.

바다에 해가 돋는 순간의 빛과 효과를 그려낸

인상파의기념비적 작품인 모네의 "해돋이- 인상"은 터너가 즐겨 그린 빛의 풍경이기도 하다. 

그러나 빛의 감각적 효과에 치중한 인상파 화가들의 그림보다 터너의 그림은 훨씬 풍요롭다.

그의 그림에는 색체와 촉감과 소리가 서로 부딪쳐 증폭되면서 온몸으로 엄습하는 모종의 숭고함이 있다.

가장 터너다운 그림인 "눈보라속의 증기선"(바로 위의 작품)이

우리에게 던지는 이미지는 대담함을 넘어 가히 충격적이다.

이만큼 격렬한 이미지는 터너 이전에도, 터너 이후에도 만나기가 힘들다.

 

눈보라가 몰아치는 바다.

한국의 시인 박목월은 눈 내리는 바다를 수억만 마리 흰말들이

해면으로 달려 내려오는 이미지로 묘사한 적이 있다. 

 

흰말의 무리가 달려와서는앞무릎이 팍팍 끓어지며 순간마다 침몰해 갔다.

해면(海面)에.억의 억만 필의 흰말은

천지를 휘몰아 올리는 회오리바람 기둥으로 뻗치며 휘휘 달리며 몰아치며 침몰해 갔다. 

 

-박목월."눈썹B"중에서 

 

 숨 막히는 일대 장관 박목월의 시에서는 보기 드문 강렬한 이미지즘이다.

목월의 시 "눈썹 B" 가 침몰관 하강의 움직임을 보여준다면

"눈보라속의 증기선"에 나타난 운동은 소용돌이다.

눈보라가 몰아치는 하늘과 바다는 증기선이 뿜어낸 연기와 더불어

이미 경계를 알수 없는 소용돌이 속에 거세계 휘말리고 있다.  

 

색채들은 서로 침투하고 성난붓은 마구 휘달린다.

그리하여 기어코 증기선조차 쇳덩어리의 선체를 지우고

그것을 움직이게하는 동력인 바로 그 증기가 되려한다..

바람이 되려한다. 아니 증기도, 바다도, 바람도 아닌 혼돈이 되려한다.

그리하여 우르릉 막 쏟아지는 소리로, 온몸의 촉감으로 밀려온다.

액자 속의 화면을 넘어서 살갗에 와락 와 닿는 소용돌이의 속도감을 보라.

 

실제로 터너는 폭풍을 그리기 위하여 한 어부에게

바다에 폭풍이 불면 자기를 갑판 돛대에 묶고 배를 띄워 달라고 간청했다고 한다.

그는 바다가 끓어 오르고 하늘이 쪼개지는 폭풍을 온몸으로 겪는다.

그리하여 그림에는 폭풍과 온몸으로 생생하게 부딪쳐 본 사람만이 느꼈을 법한 위험한 힘이 실려 있다.

소용돌이는 소멸의 도상이기도 하다.

모든것은 소용돌이 속에서 해체된다.

 

사랑에 대한 집착도,

젊은날의 추억도,

삶도 원심 분리가 된다.

 

여름하늘을 뒤덮는 소용돌이의 대기,

거대한 파괴자 태풍 또한 그렇지 않은가.

 

그리하여 소용돌이는 생성이자 소멸이다.

터너는 생성과 소멸 사이에 있다.
